Going Vegetarian: A Healthy Way to Lose Weight

November 15th, 2010

In an effort to lose weight by following different diet plans, many people avoid eating certain types of food. Some people sacrifice fast food, potato chips, and chocolate, while some people even stop eating meat altogether. That is what vegetarians do: they abstain from eating meat products. This is a diet that people who are trying to lose weight should consider.

vegetarian dietFirst off, one should know the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan. A vegetarian is a person who doesn’t eat meat, fish, or poultry but might eat products like eggs, cheese, or milk. A vegan, on the other hand, is a person who doesn’t eat any type of food made from animal products.

The earliest vegetarians were the ancient Greeks and Indians. They were focused on the belief of nonviolence towards animals, which became their reason for abstaining from eating meat. Modern vegetarians do so for a number of reasons. They may abstain from eating meat due to ethical, religious, cultural, or health reasons. Along with these different reasons for being a vegetarian, there are also different types of vegetarians. For instance, a lacto-vegetarian may eat dairy products but not eggs, an ovo-lacto vegetarian may eat eggs and dairy products, while a semi-vegetarian may eat meat, fish, or poultry on occasion.

Many studies have concluded that a vegetarian diet will not only help you in losing weight, it will also keep you healthy. A great number of medical studies have found that vegetarians usually have lower body mass index, lower cholesterol, and lower levels of fat compared to meat eaters. They also find that vegetarians have a decreased risk for illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, renal disease, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s.

There are a number of people that believe that a vegetarian diet will eliminate some of the necessary nutrients that people get from eating meat, like protein and calcium. This is false, however, because scientists say that all vegetarians have to do to get these needed nutrients is to find a good plant substitute that has these same nutrients. For example, calcium that is found in meat can also be found in leafy green vegetables such as spinach, collard greens, and beet greens. Sometimes even the plant substitute has more nutrients than the meat products.

Whatever your reason for being one, becoming a vegetarian is not only good for losing weight, it is also good for your health. That is what good weight loss programs do. They help you lose weight but also keep you fit and healthy.
