Why Diet Alone Is Not Enough

April 26th, 2010

It is no secret that more and more people are becoming overweight every year – a trend that has begun to affect even children. The main culprit is the fact that many people prefer to stay at home and watch TV or surf the Internet rather than go out and engage in outdoor activities. Add to these the proliferation and popularity of fast food products and junk food.

For many people, the most obvious way of losing extra weight is dieting. Of these people, women make up the majority, most joining slimming clubs, buying low-calorie and low-fat food, and purchasing the market’s newest miracle drugs for losing weight.

The sad part is that dieting, on its own, is also a major cause of weight gain. This statement may earn the scoff of many readers, but it is a fact that the reduction of food intake puts one’s body into a state called “famine alert”. While it is not the person’s intention, the body starts to believe that food is scarce – thus slowing down the metabolism to make the most out of the small quantity of food. In fact, it is these types of crash diets that contribute to making one gain weight faster, especially if one goes back to normal eating.

The reason is that dramatic weight loss involves mostly the breaking down of water, muscle, and other lean tissues in a person’s body. The one thing not broken down as fast is fat. This is because the body is programmed to protect its fat reserves over everything else. Thus, one can theoretically lose more than 10 pounds in a week – but less than two pounds of that include fat. The danger arrives in the form of reverting to normal eating habits, which is a common occurrence. This time, the body tries to store more fat than usual because of the “famine alert”, with the metabolism usually staying at low rate.  After that, the rule of thumb that those that eat more than they can burn off will gain weight, applies.

Thus, one can conclude that dieting alone is not enough for a person to reduce weight. Those who are serious about getting their weight under control should also commit themselves to radical lifestyle changes for effective and stable results. In fact, researchers from the American Journal of Physiology have released a study claiming that losing weight entails a strict diet and a regular exercise.

The study utilized monkeys on years-long high-fat diets, which were then shifted to normal monkey food. The researchers found that the diet shift did little towards significant weight loss, even if there was a 30-percent reduction in the monkeys’ daily intake. One of the researchers, Dr. Judy Cameron, claimed that the “study demonstrates that there is a natural body mechanism that conserves energy in response to a reduction in calories”, and that “food is not always plentiful for humans and animals so the body seems to have developed a strategy for responding to these fluctuations”.

Another reason why dieting alone is not enough lies in the fact that both thin and fat people can have roughly the same calorie intakes per day. The difference can be measured using the type of food that they are eating. Many people make the mistake of treating all kinds of fat as harmful. This is only applicable to saturated fats and the like. There are also the essential fatty acids, which are important for the body.

The downside of avoiding fats altogether by going on low-fat and no-fat diets, in addition to depriving the body of the essential fatty acids, is that these types of diets are high on sugar and salt for palatability reasons. The ironic thing is that these diets can actually lead to weight gain. According to some studies, the so-called alkaline diet (involves eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), plus regular exercise is among the most efficient and most effective ways to combat obesity.

Ellen DeGeneres’ Diet Tips

April 26th, 2010

The woman who voiced the lovable but memory-challenged Dory in the hit Disney-Pixar movie “Finding Nemo” is perhaps one of the most popular and recognizable celebrities in American television today.  Ellen DeGeneres is an American stand-up comedian, TV host and actress considered as a girl-next-door type of star. Apart from hosting her own talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, she is also a judge of the acclaimed talent show “American Idol” – making her loved, watched, and appreciated by millions of people.

Ellen DeGeneresEllen, though, is miles apart as compared to a prototypical female star. She is openly lesbian, married to a woman (actress Portia de Rossi), eschews girly fashion, and at 52, is not exactly young.  Still, she has won 12 Emmys and many other awards for her work in television. In fact, she has been recently declared by Out magazine as number one on their list of the 50 most powerful and influential gay people in the world – not to mention being one half of one of the most popular celebrity couples today.

So what is it exactly that people find about her that is appealing?  The answer perhaps lies in her captivating and wonderful personality resulting from staying true to what she wants, what she feels, and what she believes in.  One may start to wonder, though, about where she gets all her energy and resolve.  It may be tiring enough that she has two full-time jobs (plus other small projects), but she also has family to take care of.  But as it appears, she seems to be on the younger side of 52, and certainly looks better and fuller of energy than even people half her age. Her secret?  A strict and well-balanced diet. Ellen is a devoted vegan.

To those unfamiliar with the term, or have limited knowledge about it, veganism is a unique philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to do away with the practice of using animals for food, clothing, and others, as well as refraining from using and consuming any kind of animal product.  Veganism was founded by Donald Watson in 1944 as an alternative to vegetarianism, which in his opinion still contributes to the exploitation of animals. It is usually adopted by people who have ethical and moral convictions regarding animal welfare and rights, as well as for personal health, and environmental, spiritual, and religious concerns.

Generally, is it considered as a form of vegetarianism, although it differs by incorporating a complete and pure vegetarian diet. To be a vegan, however, requires careful planning and food selection, as it can lead to deficiencies in calcium, iron, iodine, and vitamins B12 and D. If properly planned, it is considered to be healthy and nutritional. Taking dietary supplements is also necessary.

Ellen DeGeneres was not always a believer in the philosophy, though.  As time went by, she learned more about the happenings inside the world’s slaughterhouses, which feature cruelty that would shake true animal lovers. One day, she suddenly decided to be a full-blown vegan, starting by refusing to eat anymore meat. An interviewer once said about Ellen, “But she can also talk earnestly and at length about how to ‘breathe into’ your problems or about how the suffering in slaughterhouses and her love for animals prompted her to give up meat”.

The interviewer also added that “At age 52, when Hollywood is over and done with the majority of its sweethearts, Ellen is hip, hot, and healthy. With a vegan diet, a dedication to yoga, a vocabulary salted with self-help buzzwords, and, lest we forget, a wife instead of a husband, Ellen embodies the modern version of everyone’s neighbor and friend. Ellen is currently on a sugar ban as well, and as she says, “No cake, no cookies, no candy”.

The Best Herbal Diet Pills

April 23rd, 2010

Celebrities like Oprah, Britney Spears, and Anna Nicole Smith have endorsed various herbal diet pills. Women who aspire to look like these celebrities might easily believe that the pills can give them a well-toned and attractive body. The reality is that these diet pills only enhance the weight loss process. Doctors usually recommend weight loss pills to obese patients. Effective weight loss only occurs through regular exercise and a healthy diet. Nonetheless, diet products can accelerate the rate of weight loss and provide you with visible results. Below are some of the best herbal diet pills in the pharmacy market.

  1. Acai Berry Select- This herbal diet pill includes l-theanine, chromium, and green tea in its ingredients. These components allow the body to detoxify more wastes and increase the body’s total energy level. You do not suffer from a loss of energy despite your body losing a certain amount of weight. Acai Berry’s weight loss supplements also promote regular and peaceful sleeping hours.
  2. Apple Cider Vinegar- This herbal product reduces weight by burning fat and inhibiting the body’s appetite. The fat you consume is burned by the apple vinegars instead of being stored by the body. Through its appetite inhibiting effect, you can maintain the weight you lose through exercise.
  3. Guarana or Brazilian Cocoa is a diet product originating from the Amazon rainforest. This diet pill is heavy on caffeine, which stimulates your body’s mental alertness and fights exhaustion. The stimulation strengthens your stamina and physical endurance, allowing you to engage in body-toning and fat-burning exercise.
  4. Hoodia Diet Pills- These diet pills originated from laboratories in South Africa. The hoodia plant contains the molecule P57, which can suppress the appetite to a great extent. A study made on 30 obese people showed the pill can lessen an individual’s calorie intake. Individuals who had taken hoodia consumed 1000 calories less than those who did not have the diet pill.
  5. Zalestrim- This diet pill is made of herbal extracts from ginger, green tea, and cinnamon. Green tea is in charge of increasing your body’s metabolic weight and of inhibiting the appetite. The Zalestrim diet pill is recommended for women over 40 years old.

Herbal diet pills offer women natural weight loss methods. Unlike anti-obesity medications, these pills can be applied to bodies that are overweight. Nonetheless, diet pill consumers should keep safe practices in mind. Diet pills are not a substitute to regular exercise and a healthy diet. The effects of diet pills will not show if you keep on eating fatty and oily foods.

Regular exercise is necessary for toning and strengthening the body. Diet pills will regulate your weight but they cannot get rid of your accumulated fats. Studies also show that exercise increases the body’s metabolism. Once you start your day with a workout, your body will metabolize the food you consume faster. Fewer fats are absorbed and stored into your body. The balance between fat lost and gained is established.

Choose an herbal diet pill according to your body mass index (BMI) and medical conditions. A safer precaution would be to consult your doctor before buying any weight loss product. The doctor can recommend a pill that will be safe and effective for your body’s current condition. Obese patients are usually advised a specific diet. Overweight persons can begin their diet by eating fewer carbohydrates, dark meats, and oily foods. Herbal diet pill treatment is best complemented with more fruits, vegetables, and whole wheat product food consumption.

South Beach Diet Review

April 23rd, 2010

The South Beach Diet is one of the most popular weight loss plans. Unlike other diet methods, South Beach encourages healthy eating instead of less eating. Food choices for this diet include fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean protein sources.

The diet is divided into three phases. Each phase allows your body to adjust to new food changes. During the first phase, you are not allowed to eat any carbohydrates. Only vegetables and appropriate meat portions are to be eaten. Meat sources in the first phase include beans, eggs, poultry, and low-fat cheese. Your body can anticipate a weight loss between eight and 13 pounds. This phase lasts for about two weeks. Majority of the weight lost comes from the water in your body.

The next phase brings back carbohydrates. You can only consume complex carbohydrates from whole wheat products and fruits. Whole wheat products include bread, pasta, brown rice, and certain vegetables. Protein is acquired from lean sources and food must be cooked in olive oil or canola oil. You can indulge in wine but beer and other liquors are not allowed. During this phase, the body resumes to a normal weight loss of one to two pounds a week. You can indulge in non-diet foods but be sure to not eat too much.

The third phase is called the maintenance phase. South Beach Diet is not a fad diet that should only be done for a few weeks. Instead, the diet introduces healthy choices and incorporates them permanently to your lifestyle. Complex carbohydrates, lean meats, and monounsaturated fats will be the main members of your meal plans. You can still eat other kinds of foods but you should focus more on the healthy carbohydrate and safe fat options.

South Beach bases its meal plans on the Glycemic Index. Carbohydrate-heavy foods such as white bread, white rice, and cornflakes are highest on the glycemic index. These foods cause a high production of insulin, which decreases the body’s blood sugar levels. As a result, you do not have enough energy and become hungrier for more carbohydrates. You end up eating more frequently and in higher quantities.

Complex carbohydrates do not give the body the same effect. They give you enough energy, thus prolonging the satisfaction one feels after a meal. Expect to eat less carbohydrates and a moderate amount of food in your next meal.

The South Beach diet is safe and effective with its promotion of eating healthy carbohydrates and fats. Another advantage is the diet’s purpose: a long-term lifestyle choice for your health. Most fad diets only last three days to two weeks, but this diet makes sure you eat healthy for the rest of your life.

The downside to the diet comes during the first phase. Although you lose eight to 13 pounds quickly, experts recommend that you should only lose two pounds in a week. The lack of carbohydrates will also weaken your body and will lower your energy levels. Thankfully, the diet resumes to the two-pound loss rate in the next phase. Individuals concerned with the weight loss rate can begin with the second phase instead. You may have a difficult time depriving yourself of carbohydrates. The body will adjust more easily if it gets used to the different foods being recommended by the diet.

How Prescription Diet Pills Work

April 22nd, 2010

Diet pills are a strong presence in the pharmacy industry. The pills’ “fast track” and “guaranteed flat abs” results convince consumers that a weight loss product is the answer to their fat problem. These diet solutions, however, must be studied thoroughly before one buys any of them. Some of these pills cause serious side effects that can worsen the body’s condition. Below are a few important points to consider before buying any diet product.

Three types of diet medication

Diet products fall under three categories: herbal supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, and prescription drugs. Herbal supplements do not require a doctor’s approval. Unlike prescription and OTC medicines, herbal medicines use organic ingredients extracted from plants. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consider supplements as food products rather than drugs.

OTC drugs can be purchased without a doctor’s recommendation. Although OTC drug purchases are not officially advised by a physician, the FDA ensures that these products are regulated.

Prescription drug is the only classification that requires a doctor’s recommendation. The doctor’s prescription is necessary for the patient’s safety and long-term health. The side effects of prescription drugs are monitored by the attending physician.

How weight loss happens

Diet pills either act as appetite suppressants or as fat absorption inhibitors. Other diet products reduce weight by employing both functions. Appetite suppressants influence the hypothalamus, a region located in the brain. The diet pill inhibits the hypothalamus’ production of norephinephrine and serotonin, hormones responsible for the full feeling one experiences after eating. Decreasing hormone production prevents one from overeating during a meal or eating too often in a day. Some examples of appetite suppressant pills are Merdia (generic sibutramine), Adipex (generic phentermine), and Tenuate (generic diethylpropion).

Fat absorption inhibitors work by blocking the action of the lipase, which is responsible for metabolizing fat located in the intestinal track. The inhibition of this enzyme lessens the fat absorbed by the body. Instead, the fat from the food consumed is released through bowel movements. One popular fat blocker is orlistat (brand name Xenical).

Like other medicines, weight loss products come with their side effects and unhealthy consequences. Prescription diet pills undergo strict regulation and recommendation since certain amounts can lead to addiction. Doctors require specific dosages to prevent the patient from getting addicted to the diet pill.

Another consequence of diet pills is developed tolerance, which occurs six months after consuming the medicine. The individual’s weight levels off, reducing the rate at which fats are burned in the body.

Xenical and Merdia are said to be the most effective weight loss products, shedding about five to 22 pounds in a year. The weight reduction rate will depend on the person’s health condition, body mass index, lifestyle, normal metabolic rate, and diet. Individuals worried about their weight should consult a doctor to fully understand the situation. Seeking professional help guarantees better results than buying the most popular diet product in the market.

Proactol Diet Pill

April 12th, 2010

Well known diet pill Proactol has been proven to eliminate 27 percent of the body’s fats. The results of a clinical research on the pill has garnered it approval by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency). Proactol works by binding the fats found in your food. The amount of pills taken depends on the fat count in your meal. The ingredient responsible for fat binding is Neoptunia. Neoptunia works by preventing the absorption of fat in your intestines. What results is no weight gain but your body is able to retain the necessary vitamins and minerals from your meals.

Clinical studies show that Proactol is able to lessen one’s appetite, reduce weight, and lower the blood’s cholesterol levels. You are less prone to eating fatty foods like chocolate or burgers because of its appetite suppressant function. Your body enjoys balanced levels of cholesterol and reduced fat, thanks to the pill’s fat-binding action. While enjoying Proactol’s diet benefits, do not forget to take regular exercise. Although your body will lose a lot of weight, you will need to sculpt your muscles and abs to look good. You may want to consult with your doctor before consuming any Proactol. It is important to understand your body and the product first before making the pill a part of your lifestyle.
